BURUNDI: INAUGURATION OF THE PRINCESS CAROLINE CENTRE

Many people in Bururi around the President of AMADE Burundi to attend the inauguration of the Mother-Child Princess Caroline Health Centre.

A delegation from Monaco inaugurated on September 21st the « Mother-Child Princess Caroline Centre » in the province of Bururi. This health centre is a cornerstone of the program supported since 2008 by AMADE Burundi, AMADE Mondiale, Fight Aids Monaco and Monaco's Government, in order to support 13.000 orphans or vulnerable children (OVC) and 40.000 pregnant women.
Mrs. Spès Nihangaza, President of AMADE Burundi, was accompanied by Mr. Francis Kasasa, Secretary general of AMADE
Mondiale, and Mr. Jérôme Froissart, Head of the Monegasque Cooperation. The delegation was pleased to attend the inauguration of the Mother-Child Princess Caroline Centre, named after H.R.H. The Princess of Hanover in recognition of Her personal involvement for Burundian children.
The Centre covers an health area composed of more than 7.700 people. For the sole year 2011, more than 12.000 children received health services from the Centre; 94 HIV-positive pregnant women have been followed-up to prevent mother-to-child HIV transmission.

After years of war and an elevated HIV prevalence rate - that makes Burundi the 16th most HIV-suffering subsaharian African country - there are today more than 800.000 orphans and vulnerable children in the country.
The « community assistance for orphans and vulnerable children » program has shown since 2008 some encouraging results, among which:
- access to basic healthcare for 12.700 OVC through the Bururi health Centre and other partner centres
- access to education for 15.000 OVC and distribution of 36.000 scholar kits
- building of 240 social houses
- raising awareness of 40.000 pregnant women about screening tests
- professional training for 120 family leaders, guardians of orphans, to develop income-generating activities.
Scheduled until 2014, the program plans to complement the services provided by the Mother-Child Princess Caroline Centre, adding to them antenatal consultation, family planning, infants consultation and vaccination.
