| ONE BIRTH IN MONACO - ONE BIRTH IN NIGER |
More than four in five children of Niger come to birth without any medical assistance. Giving birth at home may be an ancient inherited pattern for women in Niger, it is also a necessity in many case.
The fact is that too many mothers cannot afford quality antenatal care. This issue is reinforced by the limited number of maternity care centres, far away from the patients' living place. Therefore, most of pregnant women are not followed up by skilled health personnel until the very last moments, once complications have already occured.

In the frame of the bilateral cooperation between the Republic of Niger and the Principality of Monaco, the Monegasque Cooperation has decided to focus its action in the area of health more particularly on basic health care for everyone and hospital partnerships. The main objectives are the following:
- to build or to restore basic health facilities
- to equip the facilities
- to train health personnel
- to provide the patients with enough drugs, consumables and kits
The International Cooperation Division has financially supported four healthcare facilities in Makani-Gao, Tabla, Filingué and Komba. These facilities cover a population of more than 50 000 people, and provide the mothers and infants with affordable quality care, adaptated to their situation. In 2009, more than 1 100 births took place in these four centres.

Nonetheless, the partner facilities are still in serious need of consumables and delivery kits, as our President, H.R.H. The Princess of Hanover, has noticed during Her field visit on February 2009.
The delivery kits are made up of antiseptics, vitamins and various hygiene products for mothers and infants, amongst which:
- Sterile gloves
- Household soap
- Tablets of iron
- Antibiotics
- An insecticide-impregnated mosquito net
- Compresses
The mothers receive the kit on the occasion of the last antenatal visits.
Many hundreds of delivery kits are stilll necessary on the ground, each year, to benefit every pregnant woman followed up by the healthcare facilities.

With only 22 Euros, you can ensure the purchase and distribution of one delivery kit, and contribute to provide a birth with all the care it should receive.
