BURUNDI: MORE THAN 800.000 ORPHANS AND VULNERABLE CHILDREN

A recent survey conducted by the National Council of the Fight against AIDS concluded that more than 830.000 burundese children are orphans and living in extreme conditions.

Deeply hurt by the consequences of the civil war and the AIDS pandemic, the children need an adaptated and regular assistance.

Objectives 2008-2011

Four different bodies gathered in a covenant whose goal is to assist the orphans and vulnerable children, as well as people living with HIV in the provinces of Bujumbura and Bururi (Burundi).
This partnership, which started in April 2008, brings together the Princely Government, Fight Aids Monaco, AMADE Burundi and AMADE Mondiale, within an ambitious three-years project based on a triple approach:
  • Access to the basic services for the orphans and vulnerable children: medical and scholar assistance, professional training, restoration of social houses.
  • Medical care for the people living with AIDS: medical treatments, home care.
  • Reducing the transmission of the virus from the mother to the child: prevention and information campaigns, equipments for health centres, training of counsellors.
Reports April 2008 - February 2009
At the end of the first year of action, the reports for the first objective - which AMADE Mondiale committed for - are the following:
  • More than 9.000 OVC have received medical care; 4.000 of them have been consulted in partners health centres or hospitals.
  • Scholar kits have been distributed to more than 13.000 beneficiaries.
  • 40 orphans-family leaders benefit from professional training, in sewing or car mechanics.
  • More than 400 social houses have been built and 130 more were covered. 257 orphans live in the houses.

Until the year 2011, more than 11.000 children from Burundi will benefit from medical cares; 20 health centres will acquire new equipment; 900 people living with AIDS will receive regular home care. Communication and prevention actions will aim to reach around 150.000 people.
