Context

Burundi has more than 830,000 orphans living in extreme poverty, more than one tenth of the population. Often left to their own devices, these children do not have access to basic services such as health care or education.

In a country where the primary school enrollment rate is 74%, the enrollment rate for orphans and vulnerable children is 20%. AMADE Burundi, whose mission is to promote the protection of children and the economic self-promotion of vulnerable households, has intervened since its creation to improve access to education for orphans and vulnerable children. It is through the savings and credit program "Nawe n'uze" that the communities' members, gathered together in solidarity groups, manage to self-finance the purchase of school kits for OVC and the consolidation of a credit fund for the financing of Income Generating Activities (IGR) for the benefit of the orphans' tutors.

In 2014, the solidarity groups supervised by AMADE Burundi managed to save nearly 100,000 € and finance the purchase of school kits for 42,749 OVC.

In 2015, the group's savings and credit activities were disrupted due to the political, security and economic crisis that led more than 250,000 people to flee Burundi to neighboring countries.

Activities

- Identification of the most vulnerable OEV (children without tutors, suffering from HIV/Aids,...).

- Composition of kits: Notebooks, pencils, rubbers, pencil sharpeners, mathematical tools that meet the needs of each age group (primary and secondary).

- Distribution through the 1551 solidarity groups' members of the Nawe n'uze network.

Results achieved

The support provided enabled the acquisition and distribution of:

- 5,510 kits for the 2014-2015 school year;

- 7,675 kits for the 2015-2016 school year.

Each child was also provided with a uniform.
