L'Amade
An appeal to AMADE by Refugee and Internally Displaced Women for Dignity to be returned to them.
If the child is at the heart of his concerns, AMADE also addresses his community, especially women. Particular importance is attached to respect for equal opportunities, especially by fighting against gender-related discrimination. Beyond development projects, AMADE also has to deploy its aid in countries in crisis or out of crisis. AMADE is present in some fragile areas affected by conflict or insecurity, among the most vulnerable populations, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), in the Great Lakes region (Burundi), or even in Sahel (Mauritania, Senegal, Niger, Burkina Faso).
During a visit by HRH The Princess of Hanover to a refugee camp in North Kivu, a group of women and girls wished to share with the President of AMADE their life course, their main daily concerns as women, those of the total lack of access to menstrual hygiene and the sexual abuse of which they are the victims.
The Dignity for Women program echoes the emergency appeal launched by these women.
Menstrual hygiene, a forgotten problem. The lack of access to intimate protections stigmatizes many women. Many women who menstruate are forced to suspend their subsistence activities, to isolate themselves for fear of being discriminated against. This discrimination violates the human rights of these women, including their right to dignity, health, physical integrity and privacy. The use of inappropriate solutions is also a source of many infections and gynecological complications. It is also one of the main factors of school dropout of girls.
Rape, a psychological war weapon. In AMADE's intervention areas, rape is used as a weapon of war against civilian populations. For women and girls, leaving the village or camp for water or firewood exposes them to a real threat. Many of them will have profound psychological consequences, often excluding them from the community. Physical sequelae, especially among girls, without medical care, will end their lives as women.
Access to girls' education, a major challenge to fight obscurantism and strengthen leadership. The lack of access to personal hygiene, the fear of sexual abuse, lead the majority of girls to leave school at the end of primary school. Three out of four secondary school students in sub-Saharan Africa are boys. Access to education is, however, for these girls the main vehicle for emancipation and development, hope for a better future. An educated girl is a girl who is better able to uphold her rights, to be able to fully develop her potential.
Program Objectives
Enable vulnerable girls and women to access menstrual hygiene and prevent sexual abuse;
Provide medical and psychological care for girls who are victims of sexual violence and support their social reintegration;
Promote access to secondary education for girls.
Projects
Access to menstrual hygiene
Creation of intimate protection production units in refugee and IDP camps. These production units enable women to develop an economic activity while providing an innovative solution to the lack of access to intimate protections.
Access to intimate protections is an opportunity to educate girls about reproducible health and the prevention of sexual abuse.
Medical and psychosocial care of girls who are sexually abused
Construction and equipment of health centers dedicated to the care of young girls victims of sexual violence and training of gynecological surgeons on the treatment of specific pathologies, such as obstetric fistula.
In addition to the medical aspects, AMADE accompanies abused children in the long process of reconstruction necessary for a better reintegration.
PROMOTION OF ACCESS for young girls to secondary education
AMADE is at the origin of the construction and equipment of colleges to promote access to quality education for young girls.
Special effort is given to the quality of education provided through teacher training and access to educational content.
AMADE supports the schooling of girls through the allocation of scholarships.
EXPECTED RESULTS
Establishment of a local model for the production and distribution of intimate protections accessible to women
Strengthening the health supply and skills of staff dedicated to the medical and psychosocial care of child victims of sexual abuse;
Emergence of a generation of educated girls, future leaders of their community.
